Fetal Alcohol Syndrome Solutions
Fetal Alcohol Syndrome Solutions
While fetal alcohol syndrome (FAS) is the most common nonhereditary cause of mental retardation, with deficits in general intellectual functioning, learning, memory, attention, and problem-solving, there are a number of solutions from the morphic fields of complementary and alternative medicine (CAM).
Hyperbaric oxygen has shown some positive results with FAS as well as improving other types of brain function. Antioxidants or nutritional supplements which increase the available oxygen to fuel brain tissue recovery also improves outcomes.
Research indicates that approaches, such as Massage Therapy, CranioSacral Therapy, Integrative Manual Therapy, Acupuncture, Osteopathic Manual Treatment and Sensory Integration which improve respiratory function, rib cage mobility, and circulation to the head could also be helpful in getting better brain oxygenation and facilitate recovery from symptoms.
There is also evidence of the benefits of guided imagery, visualization and health coaching with the brain in mind.
I have worked with a number of children with a diagnosis of fetal alcohol syndrome. Results include improved learning skills, speech, vision, and fine motor control. Their parents have also noticed changes in their facial features (less of the FAS “look”) and overall movement and development.
For me the most interesting part of working with these children is noticing rhythms in their head, which I think of as reflective of neurotransmitter balance. These rhythms are from the field of Integrative Manual Therapy (Neurotransmitter Physical Functional Medicine (PFM’s). Taking IMT classes is one way to learn these motilities but I also find that looking at it from a Matrix Energetics perspective and looking at images of neurotransmitters can also be useful. My favorite Neurotransmitter image site is http://www.olympusmicro.com/
